Mica

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-06-05

Here is a thin section of mica as found in the foothills of Boulder County, Colorado. Right click for full resolution. Mica is a mineral consisting of near hexagonal sheets of atoms that are transparent to optical light. You can see the paper behind this sample. The colored dots in the picture are due to dispersion.

Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T5i with a standard zoom lens (EF-S 18-55 mm) on a 49 mm long extension tube.
